Madhesi (meaning “the middle”) is a term used for several ethnic groups of Indian descent living in the Terai region of southern Nepal on the border of India. While the Madhesi people represent over 50% of the population of Nepal, they have less than 25% of the voting power in the Nepali government. Particularly since the 2015 Nepal constitution was promulgated, unrest has plagued south Nepal as the Madhesi people feel discriminated against by the country’s ruling elite because they are of Indian, not Nepali, descent. Over 50 civilians have been killed during Madhesi protests at the hands of police, and human rights violations have been of chief concern.

This documentary follows two Madhesi leaders - one human rights activist and one politician- as tensions rise leading up to local elections.

This is the story of the Madhesi people.
